Discount only the shipping rates you choose
Make Standard shipping free while Express stays full price. RM: Advanced Free Shipping discounts all rates, the cheapest rate, or rates you name by exact name or keyword.
To give free or discounted shipping only when your own conditions are met, such as orders over $100 to the lower 48 states, VIP customers, or carts that hold a certain collection, use RM: Advanced Free Shipping. Shopify’s own free shipping discount checks a minimum purchase amount or quantity, the country and who the customer is, and then makes every eligible rate free. RM: Advanced Free Shipping adds 17 condition types, AND/OR rule groups, and a choice of which rates get the discount: all of them, the cheapest, or the ones you name. It costs $9.90 USD every 30 days after a 7-day free trial, billed by Shopify.
Extra costs, shipping among them, are the most common reason shoppers leave checkout. In Baymard Institute’s cart abandonment research, 40% of US shoppers who abandoned a cart, leaving out those who were just browsing, said extra costs such as shipping, tax and fees were too high. Conditions let you take that cost away on the orders that earn it, and keep charging for the rest.
One offer, three carts
The offer: free Standard shipping on orders of $100 or more, shipped anywhere in the US except Alaska and Hawaii. The store’s rates are Standard at $8.95 and Express at $24.95.
- A $120 cart going to Ohio qualifies. Standard shows
$8.95Free, so the customer pays $120. Express is still $24.95 for anyone who wants it faster. - A $120 cart going to Hawaii doesn’t qualify. The customer pays $120 plus $8.95 for Standard, $128.95.
- A $90 cart going to Ohio is under $100, so the customer pays $90 plus $8.95, $98.95.
Every condition is checked at checkout, against the real cart and the real shipping address.
Set it up
- In the app, click Create Shipping Discount.
- Under Discount method, choose Automatic discount and enter a Title customers will see, such as “Free Standard shipping over $100”. New discounts start on Discount code, and the method can’t be changed after you create the discount.
- Under Conditions, click Add condition and set Cart total Is at least 100.
- Add Shipping country Is one of United States, then Province / State Is not one of Alaska, Hawaii.
- Under Discount setup, set Delivery type to Shipping and Which rates to Choose specific rates, then select your Standard rate.
- Under Discount value, set the Discount type to Free.
- Switch on Test mode if you want to try it first, then click Create discount.

The 17 condition types
Each condition checks one thing about the checkout:
- Cart: Cart total (after product and order discounts), Cart subtotal (before discounts), Cart quantity, Cart weight (g, kg, oz or lb), and Has subscription.
- Location: Shopify Market, Shipping country, Province / State, and Postcode / ZIP (exact codes,
941*wildcards, or2000:2234ranges). - Customer: Customer tag and Customer order count.
- Products: Product in cart, Variant selector, Product collection, Item count from collection, and Cost of items from collection, as a subtotal or a total.
Leave Conditions empty and the discount applies to every order.
To target a product tag, make a smart collection on the tag and use a Product collection condition. To target more than 150 products, put them in a collection and do the same.
Rule groups: AND inside, OR between
Every condition inside a rule group must pass. To add a second way to qualify, open the ⋯ menu on the Conditions card and choose Add rule group. Any one group passing triggers the discount.
For example, VIP customers get free shipping on any order, and everyone else gets it on orders of $100 or more to Australia:
Customer tags match customers who are signed in at checkout. For first-order offers that include guests, use Customers → Specific customer segments → “Customers who haven’t purchased”. See free shipping on a first order.
What else each discount can do
- Automatic discount or discount code. Codes can have usage limits: a total number of uses, or one per customer.
- Customers: all customers, or specific Shopify customer segments.
- Purchase type: one-time purchases, subscriptions or both. See free shipping on subscriptions.
- Active dates: a start and an end, so a promotion switches itself on and off. See schedule free shipping.
- Combinations: it combines with product and order discounts by default, so a 10% code doesn’t cancel free shipping. See keep free shipping when a discount code is used.
- Several delivery discounts in one, such as free Standard and $10 off Express.
- Four discount types: Free, Percentage, Fixed Amount Off and Fixed Price. See shipping discount types.
- Test mode: the discount only applies when the shipping first name is ABC123, so you can check a real checkout before customers see it. See test a shipping discount.
How it runs
RM: Advanced Free Shipping runs as a Shopify Function inside checkout, on every Shopify plan. It discounts the rates your store already shows, whether flat rates or live carrier rates. Nothing is added to your theme. At checkout, the discounted rate shows the original price crossed out, with your discount’s title or code underneath.
