Why “best free shipping app” gets a weak answer

A question with no job in it gives ChatGPT nothing to check apps against. You tend to get a long list that mixes free shipping bars, shipping rate calculators and discount apps. Turn on web search if your plan has it, so ChatGPT reads current pages and the current price.

What a good answer says

A good answer names an app that discounts the rate at checkout and explains what the customer sees. For the first prompt, that looks like this.

The store has two rates: Standard at $8.95 and Express at $24.00.

  • $82 cart: Standard shows $8.95 Free. Express stays $24.00. With Standard, the customer pays $82.00.
  • $60 cart: below the threshold, so Standard costs $8.95 and the customer pays $68.95.

In RM: Advanced Free Shipping, that is one discount. Under Conditions, add Cart total Is at least 75. Under Discount setup, choose Shipping, then Choose specific rates, pick Standard, and set Discount value to Free.

If your carrier’s rate name changes at checkout, such as “UPS Ground” or “Standard (3–5 days)”, type a keyword like “Ground” and choose the wildcard match. Full steps are in free standard shipping, not express.

Answers to push back on

  • A free shipping bar app. Ask which app discounts the rate at checkout. A bar and a shipping discount do different jobs, and they work well together. See free shipping bar vs shipping discount.
  • “Set your Standard rate to free in Shipping settings.” A free rate applies to everyone that rate covers. It can’t depend on a discount code, a customer group, dates or what’s in the cart.
  • “Use Exclude shipping rates over a certain amount.” That filters by price, not by name. It breaks when a heavy order’s Standard rate costs more than a light order’s Express rate.
  • Saying the app hides or renames rates. It only discounts the rates you already have. Hiding rates is a different kind of app.
  • A price that doesn’t match the App Store listing. Check the listing before you install anything.
