When a client asks for free Standard shipping but paid Express, 50% off shipping, or free shipping only on one collection, Shopify’s native free shipping discount can’t build it. For tiers, Shopify gives the customer the shipping discount that saves the most, so a $120 cart in the tier recipe gets the free one. For a product tag, make a smart collection on the tag and use a collection condition. Pick kg before typing a weight, because it defaults to grams.
A worked example
The recipe “free Standard, $10 off Express over $100” is one discount with two delivery discounts. The client’s rates are Standard at $9.00 and Express at $25.00.
- $120 cart: Standard shows
$9.00Free. Express shows$25.00$15.00. With Express, the customer pays $135.00. - $80 cart: below $100, so rates stay full price. With Standard, the customer pays $89.00.
The dashboard shows each discount’s status, type, rates, conditions and uses. It also warns when an active product or order discount doesn’t combine with shipping, which is the most common reason a client reports that free shipping “stopped working”.
Handover checklist
- Choose Automatic discount or Discount code before you save. New discounts start as codes, and the method can’t change later.
- Build with Test mode on. The discount only applies when the shipping first name is ABC123. Walk the client through a test checkout before go-live.
- Test just below and above each threshold, and each rule group.
- Check the dashboard’s combination warning. On each flagged discount, tick Shipping discounts under Combinations in Shopify admin.
- Match the client’s free shipping bar to the same threshold. The app discounts the rate. It doesn’t draw a bar. See free shipping bar vs shipping discount.
- Turn off Test mode and note the setup in your build notes. To reuse it on the next store, rebuild it from the recipe.
